Minor Triads

In their root position, minor triads consist of a root, a minor third (m3), and a perfect fifth (P5).

To get their first inversion, the root note is raised an octave higher. Therefore, the minor third (m3) note becomes the lowest in pitch while the root note becomes the highest in pitch. Just like major triads, the perfect fifth (P5) note then forms a perfect fourth (P4) interval with the root note.

To get the second inversion, the minor third (m3) is raised an octave higher. Therefore, the perfect fifth (P5) note becomes the lowest in pitch while the minor third (m3) note becomes the highest in pitch. Considering the perfect fifth (P5) note as the root note, the intervallic structure of the second inversion of minor triads consist of a perfect fourth (P4), and a minor sixth (m6). Therefore, the second inversion is also known as the 6/4 chord.
